Empowerment of Women

In the past societies dominated by muscle power and money, men also determined the conditions of governing the relationship between men and women. Men also fought the wars and ran the enterprises of industrial production. They gave women a subordinate role in social and economic activities.

Women in the past: Women in the long past were chained within four walls. They had no

freedom of speech against exploitation, torturing; injustice prevailed in the then societies. They were regarded as the daily commodities and the instruments for sexual enjoyment as well. The liberal thinkers in the 19^th and 20^th centuries raised their protesting voices against the longstanding harassment of women and advocated their rights equal to men. In accordance with this protesting voice, women were given the right to vote first in 1921 in England.

Recent plan for women: Many countries of the world in the 20^th century aimed at securing women’s rights. But off late, a new way of thinking has emerged in many democratic countries seeking a more effective role for women in society. The recent women movement has undergone a qualitative shift from the strategy of securing emancipation for women in society.

Women’s fitness: Once women were a neglected race. But now they have shown their great thirst for knowledge, fierce courage, iron will, unswerving determination, great devotion, skills, hardihood, personality, efficiency and other qualities as men.

Women’s empowerment: Considering women’s fitness they should be empowered because this empowerment of power aims at giving or vesting them with power to exercise. Economic self-sufficiency is the pre-condition of women’s empowerment. They seek careers for earning money as well as for reorganization, growth and self-acquisition. They are no longer willing to supplement the income of their husbands. They now strongly refuse to submit to a subservient role in the shaping and growing of the children than the current role on cooking food for them and giving them emotional sustenance by their unconditional love affection. An economic solvency always determines man’s social status. In this sense, women are not exception. Despite extensive legislation it provides equal inheritance to women in the paternal property. Most property still remains in the constructive as well as legal control of men. Vigorous efforts should be made to transfer the property in the name of women who rightfully own the land. Effective monitoring progress in this regard can accelerate the process. Nations of women’s inferiority should thrive on ignorance. Achievements made by women in the field of science, education, public service, literature and politics should widely be published to mould public perception towards the empowerment of the women folk.

In the parliament: A more active role in local bodies and state politics will accelerate the process of empowerment of women. This provision can offer them an enhanced role in power exercise and will add to their strength in fighting against sexual discrimination.  

Women’s statues at present: Now women being empowered can be found working beside men in all spheres of life. They are now Prime Minister, Minister, Professor, Political Leaders, Party head, Business person, Judge, Justice and what not. There is hardly any section where women are not working efficiently. Now they can enjoy legal security and safety. They do not fall a victim to any sexual abuse, kidnapping, hijacking and others. Men do not find any scope of deflowering their virginity or chastity. 

In south Asian countries women’s role in agriculture operation has been crucial particularly in paddy transplanting and harvesting. Moreover, the dairy, fishery, poultry and piggery depend largely on women’s labor. Women now effectively organize themselves into co-operatives and secured financial assistance from bank. They have fortified their economic base. They have become the source of strength of their children.

Usefulness: The empowerment of women is very useful for the women folk. Now they do not fall any victim to any discrimination, oppression, exploitation injustice etc. They can work well beside men for the country. A portion of manpower can be utilized for the development of the country.

In the past, what seemed difficult for women are now regarded easy, what was impossible for them is now possible. The soft heart women can become stone heart in time of need and can raise a protest against injustice and exploitation of any kind.
