Women’s Status in Society

History is the silent witness and gives silent evidence in all matters. Hence it is the permanent record of the past event of history. It keeps everything within itself but it discloses the fact if time needs.

Women in the past: women in the past were treated in a most inhumanly way. According to history women in the long and recent past were made captive within four walls or kept under the cover of Parda (All body cover again by extra cloth). Men thought, treated and enjoyed them like daily commodities. They also sold and bought them in the market. Men did nothing but cohabited with them either manly or unmanly. Their outside going without permission was strictly prohibited. God fearing as well as dogmatic or superstitious people prevented them from going out of the four walls. They regarded the women’s going out as sin in the eye of religions established in those days.

Changing trade for women: With the passage of time, the outlook and attitude have been changed as men and women are adapting themselves with the changing society. The darkness of prejudice and superstitions has removed. As a result, women can now find the light of civilization and reformation. They are now equal in the eye of law and no discrimination is found on the basis of sex.

Women’s position: Women have got a new position in society. They have gained an equal right and privilege by the way of straggle.

There are woman political leaders, business persons, lawyers, professors, officers, employees in society. They are working beside men in the offices enjoying equal rights in all respects. There have been women not only political leaders, also Ministers and Prime Ministers. The policy of the same wages for men and women for the same job is being adhered to. More and more women beside men are also taking up jobs and becoming economically independent and yet much is left to be done.

Women are now lagging behind as they were in the past. As time is passing by, they are getting a change in their profession. Now they have different professions because they are as important as men.

Sudden harassment: In spite of these, women do not feel saved and secured at their working places. They are subject to fall victims to sexual harassment by their male counterparts. They are also subject to much exploitation and domination.

They have to remain confined to and satisfied at routine stereo typed and monotonous drudgery and domestic roles of a wife or daughter. Theoretically women are equal to men but practically they are discriminated against. They are always regarded as inferior to men. They are far more backward, illiterate, weaker and more vulnerable than men. Rapes, sexual harassment, eye teasing, trafficking in women force, prostitution, bride dying, dowry death etc. are being perpetrated with them. Economically they are far less privileged for in many cases they are not counted competent to gain full employment and economic activities. Many of them are forced to resign their jobs after marriage. In case of sexual abuses eye teasing and other unnatural or impolite dealings. They have the legal right to establish their all complains in the forum of the law court for proper judgment.

Unavoidable obligations: There is another problem for career and working women. Breach and re-entry points for women who enter a career after meeting certain family obligations have been suggested. They cannot take full time work because of some unavoidable family obligations. There is no fundamental change in the attitude of men towards them. Their emancipation and employment are not real concrete but theoretical and imaginary.

Struggle against injustice: The womenfolk cannot forget the contributions of some brave, intelligent and argumentative women. In the past, women were ruthlessly deprived of their basic and human rights and privileges. They could not enjoy any legal rights except sexual enjoyment. They had no right to universal suffrage. Then some women being united protested against all oppression's and deprivations to establish their rights.

Around March 8 women all over the world summoned all women to be united with a view to expressing their rights and solidarity with one another. Since then the International Women’s Day become important all over the world for the neglected, deprived and exploited women in developed and developing countries alike. They have to struggle hard to overcome the roadblocks hindrances and obstructions to make proper places and status in society.

The present status that the women have in society was quite unthinkable and unimaginable in the long and recent past.
